Bumthang (Altitude 8,530 – 13,125 feet)
This fascinating valley is the religious heartland of the nation and home to some of the oldest Buddhist temples and monasteries. Its gentle sloping hills offer plenty of walking opportunities to the many temples that dot this valley. The valley is also famous for its production of honey, cheese, apples and the yatra – a woolen material that has multiple uses.
KURJEY LHAKHANG
Kurjey Lhakhang also known as the Kurjey Monastery, is located in the Bumthang valley in the Bumthang district of Bhutan.It is dedicated to the saint Guru Padmasambhava who was supposed to have meditated there in the 8th century.
JAMPHEL LAKHANG
The Jampa Temple or Temple of Maitreya is located in Bumthang in Bhutan, and is said to be one of the 108 temples built by Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo in 659 CE on a single day, to pin down an ogress to earth forever.
TAMSHING LHAKHANG
Tamzhing Lhündrup Monastery in Bumthang District in central Bhutan is a Nyingma gompa in Bhutan. Its temple and monastery are remarkable for their direct connection to the Bhutanese tertön and saint, Pema Lingpa and his tulkus. It is now the seat of Sungtrul Rinpoche, the current speech incarnation of Pema Lingpa.
MEBAR TSHO
Local legend says that the water contained a hidden holy treasure uncovered through divination by one of Bhutan’s most important religious figures, Terton Pema Lingpa, in the late 1400s. Terton Pema Lingpa is thought to have been the reincarnation of Padmasambhava, an ancient guru also known as the Second Buddha.
